My brain has finally recovered to review the smoky haze that was the Devin the Dude show at Wrongbar, April 30th in T.O. All jokes aside, this was one of the best concerts I’ve been to in a minute. The show was originally billed as Devin the Dude and the Coughee Brothaz however, thanks to our friends at the border, only one bro made it across the 49th. Unfazed, Devin tore through his set with all the classics including highlights “Doobie Ashtray”, “Lacville ’79”, “Sticky Green”, and “Almighty Dollar”, not to mention his signature hook from Dr. Dre’s “Fuck You” off Chronic 2001.
Devin’s first album The Dude was released in ’98, and 13 years later his inspiration remains the same – women and weed. There was no lady on his back, but there was a doobie or blunt in his hand throughout his set; and somehow his voice remained nearly identical to his records. It’s no shock that the man has collaborated with the likes of Snoop, Outkast, UGK and, my favourite newcomer, Big K.R.I.T. soon to hit Toronto.
Devin delivered the energy that I expect from a live performance, and showed the Toronto crowd as much love as they gave him. Straight up, I haven’t had this much fun at a show in a long time. By the end of the night, Wrongbar was full of satisfied and smoked-out Devin fans.
Toronto emcee 4th Pyramid opened the show. He gave it his best, but the only noteworthy part of his set was Rich Kidd joining him on stage for a song and shot to celebrate RK’s birthday.
