If you’ve been following The Come Up Show, you’re likely familiar with Kayo by now. Who you may not know yet is the man behind much of his sound, Yogi (a.k.a. Yogidaproducer), another St. Lucian who’s been gaining recognition in the Canadian music scene for his much sought-after skills. From production, to mixing, to mastering, he can do it all, and artists are starting to take notice. With the way Kayo‘s star has begun to rise, it’s only a matter of time before Yogi reaches a similar level.

Yogi’s beginning traces back to the small fishing town of Anse La Raye, on the west coast of St. Lucia. As he describes it, “it’s one of those communities where everybody’s family.” Growing up, music was always around him, in no small part due to his late mother, Petronilla Deterville, a fixture in the community as the longtime choir director of the Cecilian Rays. “From an early age, she got me into music classes, playing the piano, and singing in the choir,” says Yogi. While the sudden death of his mother from illness in 2010 no doubt took its toll, Yogi offers perspective: “I don’t look at it as a bad thing; I look at it as motivation for me to move on and make her proud.”

If his musical background wasn’t already enough to determine Yogi’s future, a chance meeting with Boo Hinkson – whom Yogi describes as “the godfather of music for St. Lucia” – cemented his wish to pursue music as a career. Upon seeing Hinkson’s studio, says Yogi, he realized just how much he wanted to approach music seriously. “Ever since then, we’ve been talking now and then – he’s a very busy man – but every time I come [back] to St. Lucia, we talk. He’s way older than me, but we talk like brothers,” Yogi adds.

Eventually, Yogi met Kayo through music, and upon the suggestion from Kayo, he decided to come to Halifax and enroll at St. Mary’s University. Once he made the move, the two started working closely together. Says Yogi, “I kinda became his right-hand man, playing keyboards for him.” Now their relationship continues, and they’ve begun to find success. With Kayo’s latest S.L.A.V.E. EP, we’re able to see just how far the two have come. As Yogi says, the EP is something he and Kayo have been working on for a long time now: “we really sat down and went through everything […] making sure everything sounds good, breaking it down, picking out parts, and really [giving] a tough critique on ourselves.” From growing up in Anse La Raye to building a name in Halifax, it’s clear Yogi’s off to a good start. Only time will tell how far he can go. Find out more about Yogi below.
