If you’re not familiar with Vic Mensa, get away from me. Rude opening statements aside, this guy put out one of my favourite rap “mixtapes” (I use the term loosely) of 2013: INNANETAPE. Basking in the afterglow of the success and the collective love of the innanet, Vic decided to put out something from the vault. “Children of the Sun” is from 2010, when Victor Mensah was only 17 (!) and rocking with Kids These Days, his group at the time. Thelonious Martin creates a nice, smooth guitar loop and rocks the beat with the 90s’ chops but it’s Mensa’s rapping that really opened my eyes to this kid’s raw talent.
Even though he’s come a long way since then (rocking with the Acid Rap movement and moving to LA), it’s great to hear him spitting fire from 3 years ago. That assures me that this guy is not the flavour of the month but he’s here to stay. SAVE MONEY.
