As 2014 quickly approaches, we’re left with one month remaining in the calendar year. Although the holiday season has finally arrived, there are still many events in which you’ll be able to attend (if you don’t mind going out in the cold). With several great artists on tour, we’ve compiled a list of Events You Don’t Want To Miss (December 2013).
1. SonReal (Thursday December 5th @ The Rivoli, Toronto)
Signed to Blackbox Recordings, SonReal has continued to see success; and it’s for good reason. The Vancouver-based artist was nominated for both 2013 Juno Awards: Rap Recording of the Year for The Closers and an MMVA: Hip Hop Video of the Year for “Hometown.” Now on a North American tour, SonReal will make his way to Toronto alongside special guests.
Why you should go: Through dedication and hard work, SonReal has continued to show his progression as an artist. Great music and a humble attitude have translated into a fan-base that steadily climbs on a daily basis.
2. A$AP Ferg (Wednesday December 11th @ The Opera House, Toronto)
It’s been a standout year for A$AP Mob member, A$AP Ferg. Amidst signing a record deal with RCA in January, the Harlem, New York native also released his debut LP, Trap Lord which was met with generally positive reviews. Ferg was also on tour as part of the Under The Influence Tour this past summer and was also named “Rookie of the Year” at the 2013 BET Hip Hop Awards. Work.
Why you should go: A$AP Ferg has proved that although he’s affiliated with the Mob, his solo career as an artist has began to flourish. We’re excited to see where his music will take him in 2014.
3. JD Era (Saturday December 14th @ APK Live, London, ON)
When JD Era was signed to Raekwon’s newly formed Ice H20 Records in 2012, we knew good things were guaranteed to happen. JD has collaborated with Raekwon on multiple projects, and he’s also performed alongside and done tracks with Wu Tang Clan members Ghostface Killah, GZA, Method Man, RZA, as well as Busta Rhymes, Drake, Nas, Rick Ross, and many more. Now, the Toronto native will begin a 7-city “Do You Know Mary” tour in December.
Why you should go: In 2013, JD Era also also received a Juno Nomination for his mixtape, No Handouts. A great performer, Era also knows how to interact well with the crowd.
4. Smoke DZA (Friday December 13th @ Wrongbar, Toronto)
While he’s no stranger to the city, Smoke DZA seems to enjoy visiting Toronto as much as the fans enjoy having him in their city. This won’t be home the first time he’s performed in T. Dot this year, however, we’re not complaining. Since the release of his LP, Rugby Thompson last year, DZA has been touring and also released a collaborative EP with Curren$y titled, The Stage.
Why you should go: Weed raps and weed connoisseurs will definitely be in the building this night. If you’re not doing anything, why not go see the KushedGod in action? Riiiight.
5. Beyonce (Monday December 16th @ Air Canada Centre, Toronto)
Currently on tour as part of her “The Mrs. Carter Show World Tour” which consists of 100 dates worldwide, Beyonce Knowles will make her way to the Air Canada Centre in Toronto on December 16. Aside from raising her child, Blue Ivy Carter, Beyonce was featured as part of Super Bowl XLVII where she put on a memorable performance and was also joined by special guests Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams from Destiny’s Child. While we patiently wait for her fifth studio album, fans will have a chance to see one of the most powerful women in the world.
Why you should go: On stage, Knowles’ choreographed performances have led to her reputation as one of the best entertainers in popular music.
6. Meek Mill (Friday December 20th @ Kool Haus, Toronto)
It’s hard to believe that it’s been over a year since Meek released his debut studio album, Dreams and Nightmares. The 26-year old MMG artist has been steadily climbing the charts as the Philadelphia native continues to shine throughout the industry. He also dropped Dreamchasers 3, the third instalment in his highly successful Dreamchasers series.
Why you should go: With high energy and a passion for his music, Meek has continuously shown why he is one of the top MC’s in the game.
7. MGK (Monday December 23rd @ Clubb 77, Hamilton)
Featured as one of XXL’s 2012 “Freshmen Class,” Bad Boy recording artist, Machine Gun Kelly is currently on his “Raging With Reindeer II” Canadian Tour. Beginning in British Columbia on December 1st, the trek will run until December 23rd in Hamilton, Ontario. The Ohio native will perform songs in his extensive catalogue which currently consists of one studio album and eight mixtapes. His latest project, Black Flag was released in June of this year.
Why you should go: “Out of the hundreds and hundreds of shows we’ve done, three of my top five wildest were in Canada. Enough said! I love Canada, eh!” – Machine Gun Kelly
8. Kanye West w/ Kendrick Lamar (December 22, 23rd @ Air Canada Centre, Toronto)
Despite the controversy that has surrounded the “Yeezus” tour, the show will finally make its way to the Air Canada Center. From bus crashes, re-scheduled dates, and canceled dates, it’s been quite a journey for Ye, K. Dot and fans alike. Recognized as one of (if not) the biggest hip-hop event of the year, concert goers will get to see Kanye West AND Kendrick Lamar live in concert.
Why you should go: Not only are the pair performing back to back shows in Toronto, these two shows are the last remaining dates on the tour. Several props and lighting equipment have also made it quite a unique experience for those attending. Don’t miss out on a rare chance to see some of the top acts in the industry today.
