“It’s just pretty, pretty paper”!! Yes it is, but money makes the world go round, and Island Boy Cartel, Raekwon, and Assassin make it known with this slow-grooving, hip-hop/reggae mash-up. Island Boy Cartel is made up of Toronto’s Kardinal Official (who will performing at Western University’s The Wave tonight) and Planet IV (formerly known as Rock City). Together, they have released several tracks and remixes, mixing hip-hop with with soca, reggae, dancehall and trap.
IBC has pulled out the big guns with this track, with verses from Assassin and friend Raekwon, bridging the gaps of Kardinal’s hip-hop flows with the help of some of reggae and rap’s biggest artists. This track is all about money- the way it changes our lives, the way it attracts people, the way it separates us, the way it creates crime, the way we fight for it, and how it kills us. It’s a straight-up series of messages tied into one jamming beat, and that’s the way it should be.
To my excitement, Island Boy Cartel will be releasing an album in 2014 which will include artists such as Verse Simmons, Lady Leshurr and Bunji Garlin. I’m positive this will be a much a anticipated album; but in the meantime while we wait at the edge of our seats, take a listen below and tell me what you think.
