Toronto-based Beat Academy Producers Head to Los Angeles During Grammy Week to Do Battle
 Team Toronto 40

Toronto, Canada – It’s no longer the North American urban music industry’s little secret. When today’s journalists and influencers are tasked with seeking out album producer credits on numerous major award nominated and winning albums, there is always Canadian content. In fact, the phenomenon of there being so many producer success stories emanating from Toronto is no accident, and was arguably catalyzed by rapper Drake’s Award-winning beat-making team of Noah “40” Shebib,Boi-1da and T-Minus, among others, and which has left some wide scale residual effects in Torontothat are too hard to ignore.

Toronto’s Beat Academy has taken, nurtured, innovated and incubated these energies, and have created workshops and “live” beat making events that encourage Toronto-based music makers to explore their passion and discover ways to turn music production into their career. Last year marked Beat Academy’s first international festival and battle appearance at the world renowned SXSW 2014 music festival in Austin, Texas, where a motley crew of Team Toronto producers led by Grammy winner Boi-1da defeated Team Houston in a nail biter for beat making bragging rights. In the lead up to Austin, the sheer amount of buzz surrounding Toronto’s youth-driven producer movement prompted former Toronto Mayor Rob Ford to attend their February 2014 SXSW fundraiser at The Rivoli and attempt to program some “live” beats on an Ableton live system with MIDI controller. This time around, it looks like the Beat Academy might have outdone themselves.

On February 5, during Grammy week, the Beat Academy will be participating in the Battle of the America’s at club Los Globos (3040 Sunset Blvd) in Los Angeles. This year’s battle includes a new class of eight producers flying down to Los Angeles and representing Team Toronto featuring 2015 Grammy-nominated producer Lord Quest (Schoolboy Q), 17 year old female phenom producer WondaGurl (Jay-Z), Rich Kidd (Drake, Raekwon, Talib Kweli), T. Lo (Juno-winning rapper Shad’s DJ + former Canadian DMC champ), and rounded out by Juno-nominated Prezident Jeff, FrancisGotHeat (Tre Mission),Moose Beats and rising star Sevn Thomas (Mobb Deep, Kelly Rowland). Team Toronto will be battling a stacked Team Los Angeles line-up that includes 2015 Grammy-nominated producer Skhyehutch(T.D.E) one-half of production duo Weirrd People, Angel Ramirez, The Beat Brigade, Dert Beats, Trak D, BoomerDidIt and Snoop Dogg’s drummer Nick Smith (Brandy, Ciara). Special guest judge (also spinning a DJ set) will be the legendary DJ HouseShoes. Can hip hop’s newest kid on the block show the city of rap legends a thing or two about making beats?

Battle of the America’s Los Angeles is produced and curated by the Beat Academy, a Toronto-based non-profit exclusively dedicated to the creative and economic advancement of producers from around the globe
