I first came across Umi on youtube about a year ago when her cover of Frank Ocean’s Self Control played randomly on a recommended video. Her voice has such a calming and soothing feel to it which led me discover more of her music. Fast forward to today, she’s now currently touring across North America with Conan Gray for his Comfort Crowd tour as an opener.
The LA native performed her new songs from her latest EP Love Language that dropped just last week on October 1st, 2019. The crowd was anxiously waiting for Conan’s set and Umi eased the room with her jazzy and soulful style of rnb. She performed Love Affair, an easy upbeat and feel-good song about enjoying the prospect of a developing relationship with a crush instead of overthinking the small things around it. She also got the crowd going and singing along with her cover of Corinne Bailey Rae’s classic Put Your Records On.
She performed a Japanese song from her EP called Sukidakara (which translates to “Because I love You”) and Breathe, a song about pain, drugs and trying to stay afloat. She closed off the night with Remember Me, a melancholic song about the fallout from relationships and with High School, a nostalgic song about missing out opportunities on love from inexperience.
As a fan, I’m really happy that I finally got to see her live. But more than that, I was more thrilled to see the reaction and love that she got from the crowd. She gained some new fans from her killer performance and it’s just a matter of time before she blows up even more. She’s an artist on the rise and is on the come up and I highly encourage everyone to not sleep on her and to listen to Love Language and be mesmerized by her music.
