[Event Coverage] Stylus Awards: “It Starts With The DJ 5.0” Conference May 26th 2012 (Toronto)

On Saturday May 26th, 2012, the Stylus Awards held its annual “It Starts With The DJ 5.0” conference at the AGO in Toronto, Ontario. Each year, the conference helps up-and-coming artists in Canada learn resourceful information from industry insiders, artists, and DJs who have made an impact in urban music. Through panel discussions, keynote speakers, and one-on-one feedback sessions, the conference gives artists looking for exposure an opportunity to gain knowledge about making it in the music industry. This year’s conference included a panel discussion with producers from Canada who have made an impact with their production. Producers Boi-1da, Arthur MacArthur, Rich Kidd, Adrian Gough of Cirkut, and Bobby Brass of the duo Kuya Productions all took part in the first half of the Stylus conference. The second half was a keynote interview with Wu Tang Clan’s Raekwon and his artist’s JD Era, who discussed topics such as why he chose Canada to start his IceH20 label, the Canadian music industry as a whole, and his key to building a successful career in music. [Review] Curren$y – Jet Life Tour 2012: Direct Flight May 25th @ Opera House (Toronto)

Jet Life Performance in Toronto Opera House 2012

On Friday May 25th it really was JETS over everything as Curren$y aka Spitta brought his 2012 Jet Life Tour to the Opera House in Toronto, alongside his J.L.R. (Jet Life Recordings) associates Corner Boy P, Fiend 4 Da Money and Young Roddy. Since missing out on the Smokers Club tour last year, this was my chance to redeem myself. Entering the concert was an interesting experience as lighters and other paraphernalia were taken by security due to the fact it would be a “Non-Smoking” event; like that was really going to happen. Walking into the venue, the large number of people that were already inside didn’t come as a shock, especially with the artists who were set to perform for the evening. With a much anticipated crowd waiting eagerly throughout the evening, ........"continue to the full post to read the review".

[Review] Yelawolf at the Phoenix Concert Theatre in Toronto (05/26/12)

“Damn, I thought Montreal was off the chain. You motherfuckers live as fuck!” said 31-year-old, Alabama-born rapper Yelawolf, shortly after taking the stage in front of a sold-out crowd at Toronto’s Phoenix Concert Theatre on Saturday night.

Yelawolf Performance at The Phoniex Concert Theatre 2012 Toronto

Heavily tattooed and clad in a black leather jacket, matching toque and white sunglasses, Yelawolf surveyed the raucous crowd that was every bit as eclectic as his music. The motley collection of frat boys, sneakerheads, skate punks, crust punks, metal dudes, musclebound roid-monkeys, suburban teenage girls and Juggalos that had been chanting his name intermittently for 30 minutes before he took the stage, now gazed at the Gadsden, Alabama native, their rabid cheering somewhere between extreme adoration and deranged excitement.
