This fire started near the University of Waterloo (140 University Ave West) around 5:45am. Explosions can be seen from the kitchen in Mel's Diner. Scotia Bank, Master Sushi, University Vision Centre, Sugar Mountain, and Fubar Nightclub burned down. Caesar Martinis appears to have been protected by a fire wall. Businesses in the plaza include, Tabu Nightclub, Mel's Diner, and Sugar Mountain.
Waterloo Deputy Fire Chief Larry Brassard says there's no official damage estimate yet, but it will obviously be in the millions of dollars.
It's not believed anyone was hurt.
