A day before the official release of J Dilla's posthumous Rebirth of Detroit album, we get the visuals to the hard-hitting "Dillatroit", featuring Supa Emcee, Nick Speed, and Guilty Simpson. This comes as the second set of visuals, after "Jay-Dee's Revenge" featuring Danny Brown. Check out the video to "Dillatroit" below, and check back as The Rebirth of Detroit is released tomorrow.
DJ Soko of Mello Music Group (the other MMG you should know about) recently dropped the MMG 7" Series #4, a 2-track release featuring "Stand Up" and "Biters". Produced by Apollo Brown and featuring Guilty Simpson and Hassaan Mackey, "Stand Up" is a head-nodding throwback to 90s-era hip-hop. "Biters", also featuring Guilty Simpson and produced by Gensu Dean, has a laid-back, golden-era feel. DJ Soko's choice of cuts on both tracks is perfect. Stream and download both tracks below. Yesterday, Stonesthrow dropped a video for this track off of Guilt's 2008 album Ode to the Ghetto. If you've never heard that LP I suggest you check it out. Specifically for tracks like "Robbery", "Footwork", and "Run", a song that lead to the creation of the group Random Axe (Guilty, Sean Price, & Black Milk). Also the production roster is incredible, with tracks created by Madlib, Oh No, Mr. Porter, J Dilla, & DJ Babu.
Random Axe's debut LP drops today on Duck Down Records! Last Tuesday we hosted an album listening party, and I must say these cats delivered. Black Milk's production is on point, crafting a sound that blends his signature synths/electronic-influence with drums grimy enough for Sean P and Guilty to do their thing. Random Call is the second track off the album to get visuals. Anyone else think it looks like one of those Taiwai CGI news videos? My favourite part is Sean P cruising on a segway.
