[Interview] ANTHM talks “The Fire Next Time,” putting regrets in the past, and growing as an artist

Interview by: Martin Bauman The name of the game is "progress" for Manhattan's ANTHM. Since the beginning of last year, he's released four projects - each sound distinctly different from the previous - and improved with each one. When We Were Kings, the 90s-themed ode to classic hip-hop, immediately showcased his lyrical skill; the conceptual Joy & Pain EP proved he could not only spit, but also write songs; the frustration-filled, ~~Blu~~ GODleeBarnes-produced Handful of Dust EP showed continued songwriting development; and with The Fire Next Time, ANTHM fuses all of his previous elements (the lyricism, the songwriting, the eclectic production) together into eight tracks, foreshadowing that the best is yet to come for the former Wall Street trader. The Come Up Show caught up with ANTHM to discuss his latest EP, putting regrets in the past, growing as an artist, and much more. Read the full interview after the jump.

[EP] ANTHM – “The Fire Next Time”

ANTHM just dropped his latest work, The Fire Next Time EP. The project runs 8 tracks deep, and showcases the Manhattan-based emcee once again proving why he's one of the most lyrically-gifted emcees out right now. The man behind When We Were Kings, Joy & Pain and Handful of Dust delivers an inspired effort throughout, and the beat selection is on point as well. Another week, another visual for ANTHM. Not too long after dropping the visuals to "Be Still", the Manhattan-based emcee is back with the visuals to his "1 Train" freestyle. Once again, Elmo Kebour handles the visuals, showcasing Ant spitting relentlessly in the subway terminal over Hit-Boy's string-laced production. And when I say relentlessly, I mean relentlessly - this one may require rewinding a couple times to catch all the punchlines. At 2:22, it's relatively short, but packed with rhymes. ANTHM just let loose the visuals to "Be Still", off his well-crafted conceptual Joy & Pain EP. Check out the visuals to "Be Still" below (shouts to 2DBZ for the premiere). ANTHM: There’s really [only] one song on the EP that’s very literal, and that’s “Be Still”. And that was the last one one there, and I wasn’t even sure if I wanted to put it on there at first. But the concept came about, just this duality. Joy and pain, Heaven and Hell, the good and the bad, and the yin and yang. TCUS: It’s funny that you mention you were considering not including “Be Still”, because it seems like that’s the track that a lot of people have really connected with and responded to. Why do you think that it resonated so well with people? ANTHM: [...] I don’t think anything can really trump personal music. I mean, the feedback that I’ve gotten for that song has been overwhelming. People can connect to it.
