I have to come clean: I was never the biggest Mac Miller fan. I just couldn't rock with his earlier "frat-rap" aesthetic and I had been to enough house parties to see who exactly his music appealed to. Then 2013 came around and Mac Miller (
who we recently interviewed) slowly started to creep back into my radar. Collaborations with Ab-Soul, Earl Sweatshirt, Flying Lotus, Clams Casino and more? The dude was working and hanging out with all my favourite artists and that's when it hit me. It's unfair to box people into the same categories that they were a part of a few years ago because they/we are constantly evolving and growing. It's the Human Process.
Fast forward to latter-half 2013, post-
Watching Movies With The Sound Off. Mac seems to be very comfortable in the sound he's chosen for himself, like he's no longer trying to impress a fan base he has nothing in common with. Listening to his recent work as Mac Miller, Delusional Thomas or Larry Fisherman (his producer alias), it's clear that drugs are involved in at least some capacity. "I Come In Peace" is no different. The beat is blunted but heavy and harks back to the days of the old West Coast (you hear that whistle?) and perfectly complements Mac's stream-of-consciousness flow. He seems to be channeling Earl Sweatshirt's influence heavily on this track but that should come as no surprise seeing as how they're good friends. I'm not complaining. In fact, I'd say this is one of my favourite Mac Miller songs of all time.
