The Underachievers' latest video, "Midnight Augusto," gives viewers a look at how the duo conduct themselves on and off the mic. When they aren't performing sold out shows, AK and Issa Gold, who together make the group The Underachievers, remain true to their Flatbush, Brooklyn roots.
Gold explained the meaning behind the group’s name saying, "I feel like the things that we do could be considered underachieving, like we smoke pot. People would probably meet us at first and be like, they’re probably just potheads and then they’ll talk to me, or talk to AK, and be like, Alright, they’re intelligent. So it’s just a flip on that.”
The Flatbush duo make their act look effortless, flowing smoothly over hypnotizing instrumentals. AK and Issa don’t shy away from expressing the influence of psychedelic drugs and the effects it has on their music. When you hear the two exchange bars on any given track, other worldly thoughts are constantly being exchanged between one another. The duo grew up just a few blocks away from each other in Flatbush, Brooklyn, and claim that the two clicked over a mutual love for classic New York rap and cannabis. Producer Flying Lotus signed
The Underachievers to his label
Brainfeeder Records in 2012. Since their signing, the group has released two critically acclaimed mixtapes,
Indigoism and
Lords of Flatbush. The video for "Midnight Augusto" lets us see the tour life of the Underachievers, as they move forward with the UA movement. Let us know if you feel the energy UA brings with their live performance, and if you have been to a show before.
